Lots of ...

... patterns and fabrics coming through my door, but no little packages of 'time' being delivered!

Don't you just hate having to work - it soooo interrupts sewing plans! Not to worry, only 4 more teaching days for this term and then 2 whole weeks up my sleeve to sew ...

But, in the meantime, I have been jazzing up the old sewing room in readiness. First I started with the chairs - originally they where the unwanted study chairs. You know the type - plain, boring old grotty black chairs that had seen their day. But a fresh padding of foam, some lovely new fabric and I have 2 great chairs...

Sewing Chairs

These where followed by a revamp of the poor old sewing ironing board, with enough fabric left over to  cover the corkboard used for my inspirations ... I know, a blank board meaning I am not inspired at the moment :(

Gotta love a sewing room when it starts to come together ... just need to drill in the holes for the cords in my new Ikea table tops and I will be all set ...

And did anyone notice the latest addition to the room????

CoverPro

I was the lucky receiver of a Janome CoverPro for my recent birthday ... just waiting till the holidays to sit and have a fiddle with her... and definitely checking out Debbie Cook's reviews and tips for a CoverPro ...

Please let me know if you have a Coverlock machine, and what you have found to be the most beneficial use of it - and what I need to avoid!!!

  1. I like your chairs! I have a coverstitch machine and use it mostly to finish the hems of my knit tops. It's so much faster than using a twin needle. I use Debbie's method of ending the coverstitch and have yet to have the hem fall apart. You'll love this machine!

  3. Okay, Where did you get that fabric for the chairs? I love it!! The fabric alone would make me want to at least go sit in that room every day. What a great sewing sanctuary.

I absolutely LOVE that fabric you used on the chairs. I'd love to make a skirt from it!

  7. If you find a place that sells packages of time, please do let me know!!! I love the fabric you covered the chairs with, and congrats on the Coverpro! While I'm fairly comfortable with mine, I'm not at a "mastery" level, so I'll be checking out Debbie's lessons, too!

  14. Those chair covers are awesome! I inherited a similar chair from DH that is stained and ugly. It functions well, though. You've inspired me to cover it - another item to go on my Spring sewing list. I have a Bernina coverstitch machine that I use for knit hems and, occasionally, for neck trims. It's one of my treasures.

  18. The chairs look great - as does your sewing room. I have a CS - it is obviously good for hemming and binding knit garments, oh and sewing down elastic waists.

I am counting down the days until the holidays as well. I have done some sewing, just haven't bothered blogging about it.

  19. You sure do have added some great additions to your sewing room. Love the new chair covers and the ironing board cover. And how lucky are you to have a new coverpro to play with on your holidays. I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with this one. I can't give you many tips on this. I have a Babylock evolution which has the coverstitch option built in and I've only used it a few times so far as I only got my machine in January. There's quite a few sites I've found online that have lots of great tips which I'm sure you'll discover as well :)

  20. I'm so jealous. Expect blatant knock offs of your chairs and sewing table. :-)

  21. Love the chairs - a tutorial on how you did them would be lovely! ;)

I have the Coverpro too...use it mostly for hems. I do have a couple of binders but have yet to have much success with them. Too much other stuff to do! But I do love using the Coverpro chain stitch for toiles. Sooo easy and fast and soooo quick to unpick in case of boo boos. You will LOVE it!

  23. J, did you consider putting your 1 yard of fabric that you will never cut in a shadow box and displaying it in your sewing room? Just a thought....

  24. ditto everyone's comments your sewing room looks great - I too use the Ikea tables in my sewing room. I have been thinking about a coverstitch machine - my Babylock does it but I sometimes get frustrated having to covert from serger to coverstitch all the tiem.

Your fabric is so lovely on those chairs.

  25. I adore your new chairs, they are gorgeous. Give them to me. Now. Please. 8-)

I have a Janome Coverpro 900 CPX, which is the precursor to your lovely new toy, it is only a three thread machine, not a four thread like yours. I admit I am not anywhere near an expert on the machine, but my one piece of advice is to not expect it to behave like a serger or a sewing machine. Mine (at least) is a completely different kind of machine. .

I have used mine for mostly hem finishing on knits or wovens, and I have used it for top stitching on pocket edges and things like that. You already know the most important thing about coverstitch machines, and that is Debbie Cook's blog with all her incredible tips and information about the wonderful world of coverstitch machines. Enjoy.
