Christmas Aussie style...

...is celebrated right in the middle of our hottest month, so no snow and sleigh rides for us! We still have all the glitter and razzmatazz of Christmas, but instead of snow we are more likely to have a tropical storm, flooding, a cyclone or a bush fire! Nothing quite says 'Christmas' in Australia than Santa arriving on the back of a fire truck...
But this year it looks like we will be blessed with clear blue skies. Christmas is also within 3 days of our longest day of the year, so it is full on sun, surf, sand and funtimes. Christmas trees on the beach are often seen, and our wonderful lifesavers always have a lot of Christmas cheer on the day...
Christmas Day for us is tomorrow! Yes, being a few hours ahead does have its advantages. Though, I think the New Zealand bloggers sneak in before us even. So, sorry to all my American blogging friends, you'll have to wait an extra day for Christmas.
So while you are all rugged up, we're down here spending time at the beach and swimming...
Our Christmas lunch may be a barbecue in the backyard, or a picnic on the beach. We have Champagne instead of eggnog...
...pavlova with fresh fruits instead of Plum Pudding...
...Santa arrives on a surfboard...
...and our snowmen are made out of sand...
Christmas in Australia is a time for family, fun and friends. Enjoy your Christmas wherever in the world you are and I hope you have the best of fun as we do here...J

  1. Not to mention the Aussie tradition of seafood - prawns especially - not that I am particularly happy about that as I don't eat seafood.

Rather than a beach I will be sweltering in the yard manning the BBQ.

Judith - wishing you and your family a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

  2. Oh Judith this is lovely! I will be celebrating in Brisbane also... I love Christmas in the summer... when I have travelled and had it away in cold climes it just feels weird! Merry Christmas to you!

    1. Well Brisbane is putting on a 'warm' one for you tomorrow. Lots of dips in the pool with your lovely son to cool off will be needed.

    1. And you as well, Patricia! I think in amongst the Christmas cheer over the next few days we will be splashing the hose around the garden a bit - a little Christmas cheer for the plants!

  4. I could definitely go for the fresh fruit pavlova over Christmas pudding! I grew up partly in the tropics and Christmas was all about the beach and pineapple season! The snow themed wintery decorations hung up in lush gardens and around the house as airconditioners whirred was a bit odd, lol!

  11. I have always wondered what it must be like to have Christmas in the middle of what would be summer in the USA. I enjoyed your pictures and descriptions. As I write this I still have a day to do last minute Xmas shopping. Hope your holiday is wonderful.

  14. What a lovely representation of Christmas in Australia. I could go for that -- BBQ, sand, swimming, etc. We are having our first white Christmas in 3 years. It is nice to have. Everything looks clean.
    Merry Christmas!!

  15. Merry Christmas, Judith! Florida style isn't too different from Aussie style, although we were blessed with cool temperatures this week! Enjoy your Christmas BBQ!

  16. Surfing Santa, Champagne, and a BBQ sounds like a perfect Christmas. Here we presently have a white christmas and the temperature is -26 c and with the windchill it is -35 c. But it is sunny and there is family to hug and wish Merry Christmas. And that is what keeps us warm. ;) Merry Christmas Judith to you and yours.

  23. Thanks for your lovely comment on my blog. I have often thought of how drastically different Christmas would be in Australia! My brother lives in Panama, and for him it is the same, no snow and warm weather! Hard to wrap my brain around the fact that it is summer in your area, and Christmas is a summer holiday! Merry Christmas :)

  24. Yes, that is definitely what Christmas in Australia is like! And don't forget the 6 white boomers who take over from the reindeer "in the blazing sun" (my kids love that song!).

Hope you have a terrific 2013!

  25. Ahh pavlova and sunshine, yes this is Christmas! :D

  26. I heard the boomers song on the radio on Christmas Day. It was hilarious. There are a few goodies here too like Christmas in Aoteroa which has a barbecue beach theme. There is nothing like heading away on a beach holiday on Boxing Day with a chilly bin full of leftover ham and pavlova with freshly picked berries. My kids like Boxing Day best. To them it means camping, swimming, surfing, fishing and mountain biking.
