What I really like about this pattern...

... is the sleek shaping. And thanks to Kristy from HandmadeRetro for her quick proof-reading (see first comment below) I will also add in that this pattern is Vogue 8759 ...

Son J has a athletic figure, with broad shoulders and a smaller waist, so the typical menswear shirt with a back pleat just billows out around his waist. This shirt has princess-style seaming in the back to allow for a closer fit at the waist.

Men's Shirt
Don't giggle at the 'man-boobs!'

Apparently one of the current season trends for young guys shirts is having them move away from the typical plains, stripes or plaids that have been around prior to Summer. Floral is the new Plain! Floral shirts (shorts and tees) have been seen everywhere for young guys, and actually look quite good.

Front yoke and inside-out collar
This shirt is made from a piece of Japanese cotton, currently on sale at Spotlight. It is light and breathable, and fits the bill of being 'on-trend!' The shirt is quite a slim fit compared to a traditional shirt.

Back collar and undercollar both inside-out
I have noticed that another trend for men is to have the print on the inside of shirts, I think in an attempt to diffuse the intensity of the bolder colours, so I did this with the collar, turned the placket to the outside, as well as the sleeve hem.

Not overly noticeable with this print, but fun for me to do (and the sewer has that privilege!!!)

If it is good enough for the lovely George to have a patterned short sleeved shirt ...

... it is good enough for me Son J ...

... and he has put in an order for 2 more in this style - so I must have sewn something right!!!

  2. Patterned, maybe, but I don't think I could convince my boys/men to wear flowers, although hubby has a couple of Hawaiian print shirts. We offered to loan my son a couple of them when he was going on vacation. He politely said, no thanks!

    1. My son and all his mates are just wearing patterns and florals to death at the moment. And the retro Hawaiian prints are also popular. Guess the fashion wheel turns for males as well as us...

  5. oh dear oh dear, this is the slippery slope now - remember my 10 shirts - I started that in the spring of last year and now need to start thinking of replacements for the ones I made which have been worn on a regular basis.

This looks great and you clearly did a very good job hence the repeat order

  8. Fabulous shirt Judith. Great fit on Son J. I do love the print too. DH will wear some prints but I do have to be careful that it isn't too wild.

  11. I like that you took the photo in the weight room! Floral wearing men still lift weights . . .

  12. Oh that's a lovely shirt. It's hard to tell that the collar is the reverse of the print. I'm impressed that your son will wear that lovely bright shirt. g

  13. I used to make shirts for my Dad and my husband all the time. The pattern got pretty dog-eared over the years, but there really was no need to switch out to a different style. Dad always got plaid, usually flannel, LOL. My husband was more adventuresome and I made some patterned shirts. I love this particular pattern that you've chosen. And, I love George Clooney. Thanks for sharing.

  17. Love the fabric print, my hubby wants a few shirts in the kind of paisley, unusual prints that are in style right now too, he really surprised me, but I'll be making him chose the exact fabric, I think it's a fine line between what he likes and something that is too floral... ;)

  19. Great shirt and saw quite a few when we were out and about and DH just grinned at me when I asked if he would wear one. DH also has the athletic build, something to do with surfing so looks like another pattern maybe heading to my house!

  23. I wasn't too sure until I saw the final picture, if I was going to like it. But I do! It's got both a retro and modern feel to it. (Fabric with pattern kind of 70s, but the print is very modern.)

The Descendants is one of my favorite movies (and I enjoyed the book).

  28. Your son is clearly a snappy dresser. He looks terrific in this shirt, how nice to find a pattern with fitting for an athletic figure. I would be tempted to ask which Spotlight you patronize for such excellent fabric, but I am definitely on a fabric diet and do not need to know ;)
