So, I'll show you mine if you show me yours!!!Judithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16406164663751567997noreply@blogger.comBlogger101125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5082175528389542071.post-72028525691390610562014-10-07T03:35:00.000-07:002014-10-07T03:35:12.488-07:00And another the same ...<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">... pattern as my last dress, but with a different twist to it. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJiXOxYXabH1_Ni86XaNyFpBGrm0629BfCAq7i8tpbFCT4Jt-2zk2HfTGuGdQf81Z4HMniGUL-pDgJLrnxXUl82dzXZaa1ILfpiRnsbyt1AJnMQss2Nnqf3QensMco6izpzqH2-Z6lmNjl/s1600/P1080520.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJiXOxYXabH1_Ni86XaNyFpBGrm0629BfCAq7i8tpbFCT4Jt-2zk2HfTGuGdQf81Z4HMniGUL-pDgJLrnxXUl82dzXZaa1ILfpiRnsbyt1AJnMQss2Nnqf3QensMco6izpzqH2-Z6lmNjl/s1600/P1080520.JPG" height="400" width="250" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Now excuse the wrinkles and 'end-of-the-first-day-back-at-school' look! But the dress survived the day better than I did ~ first day back after a two week holiday is always the worst. Luckily I had such a comfy dress to wear.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The dress is 2/3's charcoal grey bengaline (for the stretch/comfort factor), and 1/3 grey Aboriginal cotton print ~ I picked this up from Spotlight last week. They have a new little range of Aboriginal inspired fabric that is just beautiful to sew with. To separate the grey from the print I use the same black binding from the previous dress.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiJeLG5fAOPDnR0mqe4rulxKgzncEwMiTcbHUzhO7JJee-3o3VMFwIAeELzRPy1p6TfwFWN1b91OjS3AFIMtUFN7sXYywXQm_p71HvwKVjjdWlarPMtHEvHJ_9rHJM-TU-45D96tqtu-aq/s1600/IMG_1221.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiJeLG5fAOPDnR0mqe4rulxKgzncEwMiTcbHUzhO7JJee-3o3VMFwIAeELzRPy1p6TfwFWN1b91OjS3AFIMtUFN7sXYywXQm_p71HvwKVjjdWlarPMtHEvHJ_9rHJM-TU-45D96tqtu-aq/s1600/IMG_1221.JPG" height="400" width="249" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I also had a bit of fun with the lining ~ no model shots I'm afraid, just the hanger shot. But I split the lining into black/white to match the outside garment fabric ... just because I could. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg44kUTenQSmB2y-eHZtRQxxhSIBMb95PwX_OpTr-wa4bcDTJxAW9BdNOcvLSgQ59vuet-BunXOZoezK1aNAROvxLSmwxzks8lLUuhcpzLyNRaV0G0JklT85Ch22SVOuVoVyai5yU9RXHM8/s1600/IMG_1222.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg44kUTenQSmB2y-eHZtRQxxhSIBMb95PwX_OpTr-wa4bcDTJxAW9BdNOcvLSgQ59vuet-BunXOZoezK1aNAROvxLSmwxzks8lLUuhcpzLyNRaV0G0JklT85Ch22SVOuVoVyai5yU9RXHM8/s1600/IMG_1222.JPG" height="400" width="250" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So let me just do a virtual swivel for you ... front, side, side, back ...</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUDsADag-TrQa9LrMSwQ2sFSa3I-kokLwbqOLEjgCa5Gv9pc1-31_uf-lsIHRnSzN-4ZMwoGSvJ4e8ffp_r1Xl9djq8CXZZISJe80WzvOXl6wDUBIIpEmkyZfAy6nSEsd71XPJf7u0gZT_/s1600/blackwhite+dress.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUDsADag-TrQa9LrMSwQ2sFSa3I-kokLwbqOLEjgCa5Gv9pc1-31_uf-lsIHRnSzN-4ZMwoGSvJ4e8ffp_r1Xl9djq8CXZZISJe80WzvOXl6wDUBIIpEmkyZfAy6nSEsd71XPJf7u0gZT_/s1600/blackwhite+dress.JPG" height="425" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Everything else is the same as before ... invisible zipper, walking vent, and the usual mature lady adjustments ~ yes, we all know those like the back of our hands. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Well as you can see the shadows are long on the ground, the end of the day is near for us little Down Under Aussies. Time to kick my shoes off and unwind ... or plan my next dress more like it ... J</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">... and with Brisbane having a predicted temperature of 33° in two days time, a summer dress will definitely be the flavour of the day! So I thought I would sneak in a little summer dress making.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirN6mgVyWqzfpc9SE8ivlaPVvtWOgaYAcKCf9zAxNFi7ozL3mBfc3JJScNZAkV_DiQXJaCTk8HpZ8uS1YvB5q6-HTgTZukFVrGkAXbnRGVVvBN2ug9oe4Mym2ZnlAqMvHLg4zBfnLIig_f/s1600/Main+dress.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirN6mgVyWqzfpc9SE8ivlaPVvtWOgaYAcKCf9zAxNFi7ozL3mBfc3JJScNZAkV_DiQXJaCTk8HpZ8uS1YvB5q6-HTgTZukFVrGkAXbnRGVVvBN2ug9oe4Mym2ZnlAqMvHLg4zBfnLIig_f/s1600/Main+dress.JPG" height="400" width="248" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And I do love spring and summer sewing the best, so had plans on kick-starting the season with a dress. Well, actually I need to backtrack just a tad. My original plan (we all know about plans and sewing) was to participate in the <i>PatternReview One Pattern, Many Looks challenge</i>. Grabbed the pattern from the stash, set up the Pinterest inspiration board (and many hours just disappeared drooling) and then came to a bit of a stop! Well, the stop was just from work, winter lurgies and life in general, but the poor sewing cave went into hibernation</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">. So it is now time to blow of the dust and get those dress plans back into action.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The pattern is an oldie (like me) but a goodie! McCall's 8788 ...</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0_vqNBWgKXmT9PP-TJkfMFy76jG4Cu1ysISykWqP1L1YhcZrfKO94K69_dsQhCPd-_WS1GsGznNq1rJOmRVL4Zh-UIFjPDMe4KivjB4cmGmk0EKFs2dKZeqJvL3s3_XEks-imqBl_R4k9/s1600/McCall's%2B8788.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0_vqNBWgKXmT9PP-TJkfMFy76jG4Cu1ysISykWqP1L1YhcZrfKO94K69_dsQhCPd-_WS1GsGznNq1rJOmRVL4Zh-UIFjPDMe4KivjB4cmGmk0EKFs2dKZeqJvL3s3_XEks-imqBl_R4k9/s1600/McCall's%2B8788.jpg" height="320" width="244" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">... a simple, basic semi-fitted dress with front and back darts! Nothing fancy, but it is a closest go-to for ease of wear and the perfect style to add variety to my summer wardrobe. <i>Spotlight</i> had a cocoa-coloured monoprint stretch cotton sateen that grabbed me, so it became a dress! The fabric ended up being a bit of a problem - it was printed off grain for about a 20cm strip along one selvedge. Just looked like it was heading south and taking a dip. Such a waste of fabric ...</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Anyway, I love how it turned out and I love the ease of sewing a simple dress. Followed the instructions fairly loosely (it is a simple dress style after all), swapped the zipper for an invisible zipper ...</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWI8T-Bv9F62D5jatNcIJjaVamdv4uqAkceKdlrE8tFHjEcKjxgdF36qzS0S0scY-YuSeRE81jnPmkX-Nr52XYK6HEGqlkONbUHI4i0Eu4ku9gtRJCxHdKHEjSSsdO228k4ahdC_FeiAXc/s1600/P1080480.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWI8T-Bv9F62D5jatNcIJjaVamdv4uqAkceKdlrE8tFHjEcKjxgdF36qzS0S0scY-YuSeRE81jnPmkX-Nr52XYK6HEGqlkONbUHI4i0Eu4ku9gtRJCxHdKHEjSSsdO228k4ahdC_FeiAXc/s1600/P1080480.JPG" height="400" width="250" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">... added a bottom band for no particular reason, but I just felt as if the print was going forever on me and needed a break ...</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggTG8Wrfq4F5JS-T-pdcrgiIQ0QgoOJIesgtunbKhGhWh2JaGGEAyF6zqTltN554EUt9L8wrafeLQT4Xt4o1CgazQdzlaJWqI7L0Bk7rTU5rBphqz5V4d32w5hYfZPxRM1HS0WzV_UAp2c/s1600/P1080373.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggTG8Wrfq4F5JS-T-pdcrgiIQ0QgoOJIesgtunbKhGhWh2JaGGEAyF6zqTltN554EUt9L8wrafeLQT4Xt4o1CgazQdzlaJWqI7L0Bk7rTU5rBphqz5V4d32w5hYfZPxRM1HS0WzV_UAp2c/s1600/P1080373.JPG" height="320" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">... and added a contrast binding strip to give the illusion that this band was meant to be ...</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And lined the dress purely for wearing ease ... oh, and I had to factor in all the usual changes ~ full bust, rounded shoulders, narrow shoulders, sway back etc, etc, etc...</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbf032afOvtRqF7nySNuUjGk1lSbkibYR0rZyWxwD8yb9wWqH5jWEY02E6M31mwWe-d893Dtxz1mkXFqqWQmejSVdIgWVu-W-fawcYpiBnpUnM5c2GWkktRWZo8Sy9yTfUE0n2oT0rW68K/s1600/P1080500.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbf032afOvtRqF7nySNuUjGk1lSbkibYR0rZyWxwD8yb9wWqH5jWEY02E6M31mwWe-d893Dtxz1mkXFqqWQmejSVdIgWVu-W-fawcYpiBnpUnM5c2GWkktRWZo8Sy9yTfUE0n2oT0rW68K/s1600/P1080500.JPG" height="400" width="247" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And there you have it, the first dress of summer. Ready for work next week ... yes, I am on school holidays at the moment. YEAH!!!!! I will be making more of these, I can't help myself - super simple, easy to wear and versatile for work, casual or hitting the town! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So tell me, what is your favourite dress pattern for summer!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">... to the Dark Side, during my blogging absence of late, to the side of .... wait for it .... <span style="font-size: xx-small;">knitting! </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It's not that I live in a cold climate and need woollies to wear ~ Brisbane is far from being considered an icy city at any time of the year. But knitting does tend to keep me busy during the nights when I can't sleep, and the family did complain about the sewing machine running at 2am in the morning (go figure that one!) So knitting needles it was to be, click clacking away under the blanket of darkness and making a cardi was a simple choice.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">With not having clicked the old needles for a few years I found a simple pattern, no buttons or buttonholes and a plainish style to wake my old fingers up with. My hands seemed to have some memory of what to do and it felt like old times very quickly. This is the pattern that I 'planned' to follow ...</span><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">How lovely does that simple cabled front band look, worked in reverse stocking stitch ~ classic but easy! The pattern is in Creative Knitting Spring 2013 magazine and was exactly what I wanted. Instead of knitting the back and fronts separately, I worked on circular needles, eliminating</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> the side seams. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">People often say knitting is like riding a bike, you never forget! Supposedly skills learnt many years back become part of muscle memory ~ too bad nobody clued me in that my years of knitting hiatus might be beyond the statute of limitations. Yes my friends, disaster struck.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The body is finished, joined at the shoulders (minus the sleeves) and ready for a quick test fit. The cable stitch around the neck looks great. I am loving the colour combo of this wool, and can see it fitting into the winter wardrobe easily.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It's not normal! The picture cardi isn't doing it ~ but if I look more closely have they actually used photo trickery to delude me? </span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>Have they used 'magic pins' to keep the cable from rolling ?!?</b></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And then the brain kicked in and remembered, I really needed a ribbing type stitch to even out my stitches and create an edge ~ and the cable stitch didn't do this. Remember all the curled scarves we all have knitted ~ edge them, or even out the purl/knit rows, and the curls disappear! </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So I am contemplating at the moment to either a) add a rib edge to this cabling, or b) undo and restart. Which doesn't worry me as I really want to end up with a wearable cardi and I do have a few more weeks up my sleeve till the winter chills hit. So I am now on the quest for the mythical non-roll stocking stitch edge</span><br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Doesn't it seem like everyone is taking up knitting again these days? Years back it was considered a necessary cost-saving way to keep the family warm, something only our Grandmother's did, keeping their hands busy between cooking and other domestic duties of the day. But now it has become quite a fashion statement ~ even a form of graffiti (have you seen 'yarnbombing' in action). </span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJuPuA9MFBU_29bVKAZPnvGQNs3lryqj9laxkQp1Ue3AiJXSEIFnZnnbED-a7c3xhX7E_y2Bq7_MMCTOzh5xC2hnqXcEMY5w5NaB6BbADrMYl9ErCLSVv3LZXxxmQPJmro2AVqnt3ZwYmX/s1600/WP_001886.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJuPuA9MFBU_29bVKAZPnvGQNs3lryqj9laxkQp1Ue3AiJXSEIFnZnnbED-a7c3xhX7E_y2Bq7_MMCTOzh5xC2hnqXcEMY5w5NaB6BbADrMYl9ErCLSVv3LZXxxmQPJmro2AVqnt3ZwYmX/s1600/WP_001886.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">If it is to be a shirt, would it become a tunic, more of a blouse, or have the trendy kaftan look happening ?!? </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Or it this was to be made into a dress, would it be an A-lined, vintage, maxi, baby-doll or a muumuu style ?!?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As for pants, the very 'in' harem style, or a more classic tailored look ?!? </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Or, dare I even suggest, the new-look onesies style for this fabric ?!?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So many choices, but at least I could rule out using this fabric for a summer bikini !?!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Why am I actually asking all these questions ??? </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Well, it appears that I have <b>over 12 metres</b> (around 40 feet) of this fabric living in my stash! And at 145cm (60 inches) wide, I could make make whatever my heart desires ...</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I could even go into crazy-sewer-mode and whip up some matching family outfits with this amount of fabric ... </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigWd88kfvXpQaqsWx-EBxZolUqBxyk4A0XbMtqtpBGYiduYL-0TwOHouQWAozPLoO-6KxIPaJt2jZTkysI2VTVMce8QrFw2mJbMcBerbcDeGicCG6phQ5eXMgCEhRfTIgknka8kALVO-SR/s1600/Matching.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigWd88kfvXpQaqsWx-EBxZolUqBxyk4A0XbMtqtpBGYiduYL-0TwOHouQWAozPLoO-6KxIPaJt2jZTkysI2VTVMce8QrFw2mJbMcBerbcDeGicCG6phQ5eXMgCEhRfTIgknka8kALVO-SR/s1600/Matching.jpg" height="240" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And still have enough left over for new curtains or a doona cover! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The possibilities are mind-blowing ...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">But seriously, I think starting with Vogue 8876 will probably put a dent in this fabric ~ it chews up a good 2.6 metres of fabric ...</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Has anyone else ever made up multiple garments from a favourite piece of fabric, or been in a 'one fabric, many looks' challenge?</span>Judithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16406164663751567997noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5082175528389542071.post-44984488876846378522014-01-08T18:22:00.001-08:002014-01-09T02:14:32.903-08:00I'm off to the 'Big-Smoke' ...<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">... yes siree! I am heading south to the fashion capital of Australia ... Melbourne, with it's European lifestyle and unusual climate, it does give the impression around this little country of ours as being more fashion forward and quirky than the other cities. My holiday is only a fleeting 4 day weekend, with poor hubby in tow, but I am sure I will be able to do some damage to the credit card in a few of the fabric stores.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Coming from Brisbane way, I am excited to be able to visit a few different fabric stores. Yes, I know, there is always online shopping, but we all must admit, there is nothing equal to just being in the store, with all the bolts of beautiful fabrics lined up and being able to actually touch each (and every) one.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">* Clear It</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So let me warn you, by early next week there may not be much left in these shops. And my main aim is to stock up on knit/stretch fabrics. Up this way there isn't a great range of stretch fabrics around. Plenty of cheap poly-blend with poor recovery is readily available, but I am after the good high-quality knit fabrics in a range of types ... jersey, ponte etc. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In my pattern stash I discovered that there already are a few (what an understatement) stretch patterns that I have collected over the years - </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">... I've joined a <b>GYM</b>! <span style="background-color: white;">Without turning this into a lifestyle post,
basically when I was younger I could eat whatever I wanted and my weight stayed
in the healthy range. Fast forward to now, after having 2 kids and being right
at the end of my 49 years I have some extra kilos (or fluff) hanging onto my
bones ... literally! Why can't extreme all night sewing, hardcore blogging or
marathon knitting be enough for me to stay in reasonable shape?</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6v78iuRSrqoFnxSmzy7bLwK9IQs2R8zQjIpJ49baozZQmAk-BZ_UOhMDAAwim_JBwDJ_8SVmjtI555pmQ9bsIDHttYVyJYGiUHiex6wRyiVY9DsD-pa1H9DPqNhZcaDuUMpUFqC1eCjCm/s1600/0060-0808-1417-0929_Woman_Using_an_Old_Fashioned_Fat_Jiggler_Fitness_Device_clipart_image.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="199" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6v78iuRSrqoFnxSmzy7bLwK9IQs2R8zQjIpJ49baozZQmAk-BZ_UOhMDAAwim_JBwDJ_8SVmjtI555pmQ9bsIDHttYVyJYGiUHiex6wRyiVY9DsD-pa1H9DPqNhZcaDuUMpUFqC1eCjCm/s200/0060-0808-1417-0929_Woman_Using_an_Old_Fashioned_Fat_Jiggler_Fitness_Device_clipart_image.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So I have realised that this wiggly weight
isn't going to disappear without a little bit of help. After seeing a few
pictures on my blog last year I realised that all those wiggly bits can
actually be seen ... by all! It was like <b>WOW</b> ~ is that my stomach or the fabric
doing that (and I can't always blame the pattern?!?) In 2014 I turn 50 ~ and time
is going by way too fast. So I pulled on my Big Girl Panties, and walked out of
my comfort zone. That's where the gym comes in ...</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<span style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><b>I. Joined. Up.</b> What a learning curve! Did you know that
wearing elastic waisted shorts and a tee-shirt doesn't cut it in the gym
fashion stakes?!? Who would have thought it ~ I was sadly underdressed and
looked like a tourist (minus the camera and bum bag!) The only pair of
<i>workoutie</i>-<i>type</i> clothing I had was a little on the 'dated' side .. So how am I
feeling ... not just fat and nearly fifty, but frumpy just joined the list. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

a pair of 'modern' workout leggings and a very comfortable singlet top (both made out of crazy new-age airwicked technology) and just
love it. And I can see me making a few of these myself next year ~
bonus! Bright and fun ~ and motivating. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">But all is not as bad as it seems. As I was
plodding along on the treadmill for what seemed like <b><i>minutes</i></b> the other day I
glanced out the window, my eyes stinging from big salty beads of dripping sweat,
my sweatstache in full glistening mode. I
actually thought I had heat stroke, as there before my eyes was the most
incredible <i><span style="color: #073763;">mirage</span></i>. "<b>Yippeeeeeeeee</b>", I shouted. But ... it wasn't tall icy completely dripping,
condesaton-covered, fall in the pool cold water that I was imagining ~ it
was the realisation of what was across the road from me, right in front of my
eyes every time I work out ... the perfect motivation ... <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">... to wear tomorrow for Christmas Day! All this little dress needed was hemming ~ ho, hum, I kept putting it off for a few days for some reason. Anyway, nothing like the thought of sewing on Christmas Eve to get the mojo in full gear. So here is the unveiling of Vogue 8766 ... </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzMj0bGISsbOfsk4_pwgNAJuZDn2VX45rGEEkcTd6qS3bF27l3KXGEA0TsruLfTKJOXQPJMWnoBGTsJS90ud1OtBmNgCOMrV0mbzHnHxf4SDtaBx7iIf16L5CGmLShvM3lN9L2DltHLVyM/s1600/WP_001707.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzMj0bGISsbOfsk4_pwgNAJuZDn2VX45rGEEkcTd6qS3bF27l3KXGEA0TsruLfTKJOXQPJMWnoBGTsJS90ud1OtBmNgCOMrV0mbzHnHxf4SDtaBx7iIf16L5CGmLShvM3lN9L2DltHLVyM/s320/WP_001707.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This is the front, simple, but well fitting. It is the sleeveless version ~ yes, it is the middle of summer here and sleeves just are not going to be an accessory at this time of year. What a great dress to sew. It was fairly straight forward from the start, simple lines, a few darts and voila! A new dress emerged. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVhYCd3769iVn9ckTxgEov5Tj8EbObX1z0tb-qFk5aY10I1EwZCFxllhm8M1RqedhG5Jw87FCOJoOoCZfh5ZAuPEVO9O9VEjv7fykPbnv9mTrCwwZmV90djexVvNLNm-cv9M5qOgR_ELOB/s1600/WP_001705.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVhYCd3769iVn9ckTxgEov5Tj8EbObX1z0tb-qFk5aY10I1EwZCFxllhm8M1RqedhG5Jw87FCOJoOoCZfh5ZAuPEVO9O9VEjv7fykPbnv9mTrCwwZmV90djexVvNLNm-cv9M5qOgR_ELOB/s320/WP_001705.jpg" width="199" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I love the spottiness of this fabric, it is a Japanese cotton that has just the most gorgeous cool feel to it ~ but I did interline each piece as the white was a bit see-through for my liking. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfZiUf0sMQ5SKkXQ5uUlLAMfvafidc-ztWbNebKYB8SLFPZNqfg-RjmFkcezUOrDdyDxi9Rgv07UGLc7Ggrzap849OyaA-Ge54CzpVxiD3pnEfnhHuHs-BUCViulyVDkrTiWDC4n4HcNOf/s1600/WP_001711.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfZiUf0sMQ5SKkXQ5uUlLAMfvafidc-ztWbNebKYB8SLFPZNqfg-RjmFkcezUOrDdyDxi9Rgv07UGLc7Ggrzap849OyaA-Ge54CzpVxiD3pnEfnhHuHs-BUCViulyVDkrTiWDC4n4HcNOf/s320/WP_001711.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And because of the interlining, I deleted all the neck and armhole facings and just used plain white bias binding to finish the edges ~ sooooo easy! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizEfaDLOMvY-U-CwrdSke6EVjRsvNENQC6Fh86N_e-F5CNdP4pX09KsdDJ3357vbdVGoRfpoCtkaR6HEEN4rJDWNtkZRkHjRvgAeLTvuWz7aL8h4NRT8evHyhmgU1rQAT3NSGFe1JHsGsO/s1600/WP_001709.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizEfaDLOMvY-U-CwrdSke6EVjRsvNENQC6Fh86N_e-F5CNdP4pX09KsdDJ3357vbdVGoRfpoCtkaR6HEEN4rJDWNtkZRkHjRvgAeLTvuWz7aL8h4NRT8evHyhmgU1rQAT3NSGFe1JHsGsO/s320/WP_001709.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Just look at that invisible zipper ~ I am proud of it. Downside, or learning curve for the future, would be to consider the pattern placement next time when working with an obvious printy fabric like this. But in all honesty, I don't think this fabric actually had a regular pattern to the print that could have been matched up ... not sure if it really matters or not...!?! This dress is my December contribution to <a href="http://makeagarmentamonthchallenge.blogspot.com.au/"><span style="color: #93c47d;"><b>Make a Garment a Month</b></span></a> ~ just in time...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">All in all this was a quick and easy dress to whip up, very cool and comfortable and will be super for Christmas Day. Hope you all have a very enjoyable day wherever you are in the world ... and I do hope Santa is good to you all .... J</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">... it really is a sad, sad view! My poor little <i>body double</i> has not even a skeric of fabric to cover herself up with. <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Good old Spotlight are starting (<i>another</i>) sale tomorrow, and look at what they are doing to their McCall's patterns ...</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">... long overdue! He started up bike riding </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">(seriously, the Lycra cladded, Tony Abbott type of bike riding)</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"> and has lost an enormous amount of weight. Which means that his shirts now wear him, instead of him wearing the shirt. So for a quick and easy make I decided on KwikSew 3422, view B, with no extra features. The fabric being a check was enough of a feature this time around.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaPs5rgA3PEXY3zqhvG9JUV_s-Z5Yh6xn6EHqSokQM2jARV4YtVHrJ1FgLWHdMJ3Oz6gPH6McPaDJCqqwS74g0BTcsKsTfyl-ryRwVoPcVky8pNLiqnZld7qYImsZss8AHcu-xTAJPsFI7/s1600/JB3L26PL6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaPs5rgA3PEXY3zqhvG9JUV_s-Z5Yh6xn6EHqSokQM2jARV4YtVHrJ1FgLWHdMJ3Oz6gPH6McPaDJCqqwS74g0BTcsKsTfyl-ryRwVoPcVky8pNLiqnZld7qYImsZss8AHcu-xTAJPsFI7/s320/JB3L26PL6.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">But, due to his changed body shape (welcome to 'My World', hubby dear), and age (just had to get that one in as well) I made one major change to the pattern. From being hunched over the bike handles poor hubby now has slightly rounded forward sloping shoulders! Admittedly, he probably always had this, but it is just such a good feeling to point out body flaws that aren't one of my many body issues. One of the best on-line shoulder sloping adjustments I found was from Peter, of <a href="http://malepatternboldness.blogspot.com.au/2011/02/mens-shirt-sew-along-15-addressing-fit.html"><b>male pattern boldness</b> fame</a>. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://malepatternboldness.blogspot.com.au/2011/02/mens-shirt-sew-along-15-addressing-fit.html"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmnYj0HtzhPym9jGH44wJdZvG04JS1RrhJQuOWWDSGxNzW0kdzBz6a8lTpUo0LnFfiEm3KsO4DXzF6wH5HTBgmoo0iz-NmZPKCu14ielvUAokD9YcKxv-ZkE6cOb6M3X1MRC3RDC3l4pbn/s320/Dress.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">And other than that, all I did was add on 10cm to the overall length (hubby is 6'4" tall), and the shirt was done! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKntZotxGHsnUxSaZ23fSUMYj84mTaXrlvziux28bkvMN8wbdJIxHGRbb1MyazmA31tzAGQTvapff7-npDDuGVNn0YYTNqbvxEBv2hG6mHouZALKdQrq21tEJFKIQ5fiDIgCNaeqO-ymKf/s1600/WP_001417.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKntZotxGHsnUxSaZ23fSUMYj84mTaXrlvziux28bkvMN8wbdJIxHGRbb1MyazmA31tzAGQTvapff7-npDDuGVNn0YYTNqbvxEBv2hG6mHouZALKdQrq21tEJFKIQ5fiDIgCNaeqO-ymKf/s320/WP_001417.jpg" width="252" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Oh, I did add on 2cm to the front of the yoke, and take the equivalent 2cm off the front piece - I am not fussed on how this pattern has the yoke front finish right on the shoulder line. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJGTTTAYrFg_8RYewFa6keuSe39_vTgv2wpIJDtSPHOc0iux8ZoVcKeV8gb20xEjOxoCe3TxjheyDcJu1Nhcp5RmDsd1fqyxFxFyU8dmDDaHOxwgJceEQBu85bwPhkzO5n_jL-NVJ4LDOc/s1600/WP_001414.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJGTTTAYrFg_8RYewFa6keuSe39_vTgv2wpIJDtSPHOc0iux8ZoVcKeV8gb20xEjOxoCe3TxjheyDcJu1Nhcp5RmDsd1fqyxFxFyU8dmDDaHOxwgJceEQBu85bwPhkzO5n_jL-NVJ4LDOc/s320/WP_001414.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">And I did use a plain navy for the inside yoke, and the under collar - sometimes I just think 'all-over' check is a little too much!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />

</div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">All in all a quick make, and definitely this won't be the last from this pattern. Summer is quickly approaching and the guys always are in need of cool shirts to wear. KwikSew 3422 will be a winner in this department ... J</span><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">... don't chase me in this bright floral dress! Butterick 5917 is finished! And do you know it really didn't take me that long at all. This was just the perfect pattern to sew ~ who would have thought a dress could be this easy ... </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgycP1axEho8vwm92lxvuFBGCvxhljguTJhzwAzKR6a110v0rkuVEHIyiVCxD4vzxQRkn04-Hg9DCh5X2CX5T5uyGnjB_TqEbdoZ6kmjL7iMv1KFfTrUPjtxjQjmGBVljk0j6dF9jJyQ9Hy/s1600/WP_001487.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgycP1axEho8vwm92lxvuFBGCvxhljguTJhzwAzKR6a110v0rkuVEHIyiVCxD4vzxQRkn04-Hg9DCh5X2CX5T5uyGnjB_TqEbdoZ6kmjL7iMv1KFfTrUPjtxjQjmGBVljk0j6dF9jJyQ9Hy/s320/WP_001487.jpg" width="169" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The main feature of this dress is the gorgeous ruffle hugging the chest and neck areas ...</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzNqKrgYQsAbR87rgX7j-9Zaej5v9jvQIzKlPte6zfgRoj1Uq3PUt0RFnY-JDevcmBhBc4yIMrwHJD5uIrTSLwfoSz6Lsqdota-vhgTvMhtzVQYXxxxc6wOCbin4Itf937gE73nYBX97uB/s1600/WP_001488.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzNqKrgYQsAbR87rgX7j-9Zaej5v9jvQIzKlPte6zfgRoj1Uq3PUt0RFnY-JDevcmBhBc4yIMrwHJD5uIrTSLwfoSz6Lsqdota-vhgTvMhtzVQYXxxxc6wOCbin4Itf937gE73nYBX97uB/s320/WP_001488.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It is double folded, and just ever so easy to gather and insert! And in between is a little modesty panel ~ but I am seeing great ideas to use a lace insert here for a night-time</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> feature. I played around with this little piece of fabric till I was happy with where it fell on my chest ~ too high and it made me look old, too low and everything under was on display!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The ruffle goes around the neck, and joins in with the invisible centre back zipper ...</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I, naturally, needed a new pair of fresh white shoes to wear, and a new bag ~ but I think the bag is a little big for me ... will just have to keep shopping ... </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">... such a shocker when it comes to completing a garment? For the first 90% of making something I am dedicated, enthusiastic, committed, to the stage you could call me fanatical towards sewing. It's always full steam ahead planning, cutting and sewing. I am totally engaged in what I am doing. But then the nonchalant fairy waves her cool laid back wand over the room and before I know it, the next garment is being planned cut and 90% sewn. All this whilst the first one is removed from my mind, lazily hung up on a hanger awaiting the last few stitches to make it wearable ...</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Just look at those lovely layers, yes, a bit hard to see in this fabric, but in real life this dress is just beautiful. <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A quick sleeveless version of McCall's 6436 for work. An easy to wear shirt that I regularly turn to. But is that pins in the hemline I see! <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Please tell me I am not the only one that has commitment issues. There is just way too many great things to get my pins and scissors into, and not enough time in the day ...</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">... dress collection! My big plan is to pop a few more summer dresses into the wardrobe this year. Usually I am a skirts and top type of dresser. But after seeing so many wonderful dresses being whipped up around the globe I have succumbed to their charm. I am starting to wonder if their charm is all in the fact that you don't have to match the top to the bottom, you have an instant all-in-one outfit, and only have to worry about the shoes and accessories. Though, it does feel a little like lazy dressing. But I am looking for easy care and easy wear for this summer.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">First dress off the hanger is be Simplicity 2247. It's one I have had in the stash since it first came out in 2010. It is an AmazingFit pattern, which is what I think first lured me to this pattern. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAJXkQTmEVu7FT0p1uAhLCjtSHhB7QuCJc_ATQvCZ2LqEKITBE0nno6fF9r_Xi-hZzNTr4J-nXwD3NHlp-0T8KNg9nQ6B-p2eCY3DGRoPitBc_CsAL1rARvpO3MSVuFcCAshiaTTQycKie/s1600/2247.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAJXkQTmEVu7FT0p1uAhLCjtSHhB7QuCJc_ATQvCZ2LqEKITBE0nno6fF9r_Xi-hZzNTr4J-nXwD3NHlp-0T8KNg9nQ6B-p2eCY3DGRoPitBc_CsAL1rARvpO3MSVuFcCAshiaTTQycKie/s200/2247.jpg" width="138" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">This pattern has interesting instructions - you will either love them or hate them, depending on how you sew. Because it is an AmazingFit pattern they give you loads (and then some) of helpful instructions on how to get the fit just right for your body, but in order to do this you have to continually baste the sections together, make any needed adjustments or tweaks, then take it apart just to resew it again. I guess it is great if you need to be hand feed any fitting issues. But if you already know that your shoulders are round and sloping, your tummy is on the large side, and your boobs have headed south, then this is a bit of a time waster.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgSCtd10ZhRI_psBSDEuEVoKYqkUI5nbAoDxNj0nRxpnVfyghAn-XYPpSNZvYh8f_GdQsPjCTqjWoiEL3q-riRFcSTLom_HqCEh-aQ5S_w0HSUqxOA_euOMc3cgCSeyOZ5bBRAuUKbW6Bp/s1600/WP_001407.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgSCtd10ZhRI_psBSDEuEVoKYqkUI5nbAoDxNj0nRxpnVfyghAn-XYPpSNZvYh8f_GdQsPjCTqjWoiEL3q-riRFcSTLom_HqCEh-aQ5S_w0HSUqxOA_euOMc3cgCSeyOZ5bBRAuUKbW6Bp/s320/WP_001407.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Inside bodice partially sewn</span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">But I didn't make this dress for the AmazingFit, I was actually impressed by the simplistic and workable style. I like the close fitting bodice with the princess seams, and that the skirt continues these lines. So far I would recommend this pattern to beginners, and to those wanting to learn about the fitting process in a dress of this style. I am really pleased with how this casual dress is coming together, and want to finish it ... soon! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">All that is remaining is the finishing of the zipper (I have changed this to an invisible zipper), the armhole facing, and then hemming. I have elected to line the lower half, just for personal preference, but other than that this first time round dress is 'as-is', straight from the pattern. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAntLrlntLZ7H4IDHNrFVeWX0P5s7tJ50XAYsV4-SQrfdnEeTNrpbyHk0EfCRPyZ5LHlFPWvucSEkXHxxN_Z0T84wkHjWKsfybEXiESn2GkOFSdmmxa1eqeOfcv-TFD8G2WVtQpP6jrNBZ/s1600/WP_001408.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAntLrlntLZ7H4IDHNrFVeWX0P5s7tJ50XAYsV4-SQrfdnEeTNrpbyHk0EfCRPyZ5LHlFPWvucSEkXHxxN_Z0T84wkHjWKsfybEXiESn2GkOFSdmmxa1eqeOfcv-TFD8G2WVtQpP6jrNBZ/s320/WP_001408.jpg" width="226" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">What I like so far - it has been a simple breeze to sew! Nearly so simple it is boring! I am getting the feeling that this dress will need an accessory to lift it. Not sure what I mean, but just have a feeling. The fit is spot on, so I guess Simplicity has scored a few bonus points in this area. Because of the pattern on the fabric you can't see the stitching detail at all (either that or I have matched my thread perfectly!!!) And it is the first in my <a href="http://sarahlizsewstyle.blogspot.com.au/p/garment-month-challenge.html">Make a Garment A Month Challenge</a>, so I am well pleased ... J</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">And here is the little beauty finished, and worn for the day to work (please excuse any finger paint or playdough stains - hazard of the job!!! and the end-of-day-hat-hair!!!)</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">... and they are all just for ME!!! That's right, the first rule of this challenge is that one garment, in every month, must be for ME! Not someone else. Now this is a challenge for me. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Sarah Liz, from over at <b><a href="http://sarahlizsewstyle.blogspot.com.au/p/garment-month-challenge.html">SarahLizSewStyle</a></b> is hosting this challenge. It is a very easy-going challenge, started this month, and has lots of great fellow sewers joining up.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">So, for the month of October, I will aim to make not one, but two dresses just for ME! First off will be a new basic dress for work, Simplicity 2247 in a cotton fabric. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I am in need of a couple of little light early morning layers to wear to work. In my stash I had Kwik Sew 3693 which seemed to be exactly what I was after. End result is not one, but two new little jackety garments ready for work this week...</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">First one is made using a boucle type summery knit fabric, I just loved the colours in it (but they are not very photo compliant!) -</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Since this was the first time I tried this pattern, I basically followed it 'as-is.' But after pinning it together, I did ease in the side seams to take out that boxy look. Love the boxyness on the shoulders, but I do like a few curves to show as well...</span><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And it was just sooooo easy to put together, only 3 pieces as the facing and neck are just extensions of the front. So easy, that I quickly pulled another one together...</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This is View A, made in the recommended French Terry fabric. It turned out fantastic. The only change I made to the construction was to turn the facing to the outside, and use my coverstitch machine to finish the edges, also with the wrong side outermost! Very daring indeed!!!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Definitely a great little pattern if you need a very, very quick jacket to wear. Or made in a knit fabric they make an ideal cardi type jacket. Personally I wouldn't recommend the Polarfleece as being a great choice, way too thick to drape nicely. Also, you could have a lot of fun changing the shape of the front drape on this pattern. Or take the sleeves off and make a light weight lacy summer layer - endless possibilities, just not enough time to try them all...J</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">... it's nearly Spring Down Under, which means time to get ready for long sunny days, and restock the basic casual shirts for the two males in my household! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTOFk1Xa5h_aybq9kC9mIKgVfb0DSQVqH3sgN5pBQH828v0XZo3BGYMPFGLX6jvLV4XJ1cvmcnQm0ah3pIHsrivBzPQV0v91xNIdBF9MWqDD73edPqUd9PvmTC-T7ylWwmOROvI_yttFUv/s1600/Recently+Updated2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="276" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTOFk1Xa5h_aybq9kC9mIKgVfb0DSQVqH3sgN5pBQH828v0XZo3BGYMPFGLX6jvLV4XJ1cvmcnQm0ah3pIHsrivBzPQV0v91xNIdBF9MWqDD73edPqUd9PvmTC-T7ylWwmOROvI_yttFUv/s400/Recently+Updated2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">First off is another Vogue 8759 for my son. His request was for it to be trendy, no pocket, have a personal look, and be easy to wear. Fabric is from Spotlight, a light Japanese Lawn that is just perfect for a one-season shirt. For this shirt I used a navy lawn for the inside back yoke, inside neck, collar under, as well as the front plackets. The sleeves, collar and back yoke are all put together with the wrong side of the fabric outermost - apparently an 'in-season' trend in the shops! I did bring the front yoke section forward again, by about 5cm so that the yoke seam wasn't sitting right on the shoulder - this is just a personal preference of mine. So another winner for the son in the household!</span><br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Next up is KwikSew 3422 for the Hubby! Not as fitted in the body, but still a good shape to it anyway. I used View B, but with the collar from View A (as it had a collar stand which I prefer.) Again I used a contrast colour for the yoke, placket and collar components - just because I can! And I added in a touch of a fancy looking pocket. Totally useless to put anything in, but I enjoyed sewing it.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Both guys have put in orders for their next shirts - but they will be at the end of my long selfish 'me' list of sewing! </span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">... my mind, that is! At the end of my last post, prior to heading back to the dreaded time-waster of work, I had plans of making up Vogue 8721 view D. Well those plans eventuated and the little jacket is </span><i style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">nearly</i><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> completed...</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It is looking great, and fitting well so far. The three quarter length sleeves went in a like a breeze, and just need a decent press to set them.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The lining was the closest I had stashed away, but even though it isn't a perfect match to the purple in the main fabric I think it will do - well, it will have to now! You can see the interesting main fabric in this view, how the purple has a black thread running through it. Such beautiful linen-y fabric.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So all that is left is attaching the two different sized bottom bands. At the moment it looks like a bolero type jacket - for me it definitely needs the bands for length. So what is the problem with finishing it off - a mere 1/2 hour of work left (the bands are made) - well, I found another jacket I want to make, in the same fabric. Enter dress-maker-model wearing unfinished Butterick 5617 ...</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Again, the same fabric, but in a different colour way. This is a boxier jacket, but I have nipped the side seams in just a tad for shaping. I have also changed the top of the front band from being straight across to being on an angle - it felt a little to throat-cutting for my liking.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Instead of lining this one, I have just made my own bias binding and used it over the seam edges. It really is a fray-e type fabric and deserves to be finished off neatly. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The back and the sleeve are fitting perfectly at this stage. But as with the first jacket, it isn't hemmed yet! What is it with avoiding the hemming I wonder? For this one all I am planning on is adding binding to the hem and turning it under - not rocket science! Maybe tonight I might see to hemming one or both of them. Then just the decision about what button/s to use. The purple jacket luckily doesn't require any buttons - easy decision there! But the fawn jacket needs buttons so to the shops I will have to go...hopefully finished pictures by the end of this week. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">... and whipped up a top from the fabric I showed at the end of my last post! A few people suggest a dress from this fabric, but all that pattern happening just wasn't for me - don't want to step too far out of the old <i>comfort-zone</i>!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghjmjZuEDH471kSb4rJxiWd3bewAbGUxP-qEDswg0Ror-XAmTHNWlaS98t119Rwu2MwFwLAkjBzTPuJV1e_XN1VNUME0Sr24iEWEZlctlTCiXoTl6bwqVNepmfzOiTex_czNHMaP9wcD2Y/s800/WP_001151.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghjmjZuEDH471kSb4rJxiWd3bewAbGUxP-qEDswg0Ror-XAmTHNWlaS98t119Rwu2MwFwLAkjBzTPuJV1e_XN1VNUME0Sr24iEWEZlctlTCiXoTl6bwqVNepmfzOiTex_czNHMaP9wcD2Y/s320/WP_001151.jpg" width="207" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So I ended up settling on the fairly popular KwikSew 3915 long sleeved top. The feature neck detail grabbed my attention, as did the higher back neckline - the winter winds are blowing here! Though it is difficult to see the neck feature with this print - see, I just can't see 'me' wearing this all-over!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Anyway, I did have problems with this 5 piece pattern top. And the most difficult piece was the smallest - the 4 loops which are the main feature of the whole top. Attaching and sewing the little suckers in was easy, but what a bulky area this turned out to be...</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfEkXGoYJzVy50pSGIne8hXcYjU0eyfrpn0fEIMOEqQ0ZqR5yeq-32bF70PQYaFL-R9SHeYewslfUR7ALJKHArjPNEkhP5hSpIU3GdogKb5PFr6aXL2ZZKS1Fx-Kb3OagNkcwM261Hcigr/s800/WP_001145.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfEkXGoYJzVy50pSGIne8hXcYjU0eyfrpn0fEIMOEqQ0ZqR5yeq-32bF70PQYaFL-R9SHeYewslfUR7ALJKHArjPNEkhP5hSpIU3GdogKb5PFr6aXL2ZZKS1Fx-Kb3OagNkcwM261Hcigr/s320/WP_001145.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">When you think about it, the neckline is a folded piece of fabric, so in this area already you have 4 layers of fabric, then you need to gather these 4 layers, which instantly adds bulk. Next you have to attach the self fabric loops, which have a seam and are at their smallest 2 layers thick, and at the seamed section they are 4 layers thick. So you have now 8 layers of fabric, some of it gathered, and are attaching this to the front piece - 9 layers of fabric sewn tight in a mere 5 cm (about 2 inches) of seam! One bulky neck feature that felt very stiff and unappealing to wear. And then add to this buttons to really accentuate the area! The whole area just didn't want to lay flat, and kept pulling towards the gathering. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And the solution, I hear you all ask...</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2hZtTQ7deANBdxQ7o0FrmELh00TzrIOSPwyaKFxfnbYVelBDmX6e4BBRb6tTd8cv-pngRZn9FI7Seow2Eh4hPBcqA1D66grt2HSnFi4C4mO68FpI9uNNNOBIzVDC_JW21cZ9ap2fJPR7h/s800/WP_001146.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2hZtTQ7deANBdxQ7o0FrmELh00TzrIOSPwyaKFxfnbYVelBDmX6e4BBRb6tTd8cv-pngRZn9FI7Seow2Eh4hPBcqA1D66grt2HSnFi4C4mO68FpI9uNNNOBIzVDC_JW21cZ9ap2fJPR7h/s320/WP_001146.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Yes, chop that area and reattach it, minus the loops - and I had turned such even loops! Other than this little time waster section, this top goes together really quickly. I mainly used my overlocker, gathered on the sewing machine, and hemmed on my coverstitch! Just a few hours to get a new top - well worth it! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I have plans on making another one, as the fit is perfect on me with the higher neckline. It sits smoothly under a jacket and perfect for matching with a number of bottoms.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
